More than half (58%) of people visit their GP as a first port of call if they, or a family member become ill, according to a survey carried out by The Information Standard. But, with people going away on their summer holidays and unable to get to their GP; more people may find themselves needing to turn to the internet for health advice and information instead.
Ann Robinson, director of public awareness for The Information Standard, said: “The natural port of call if you or a family member falls ill is usually visiting the GP. However, if you’re on holiday and away from home, then you might not be able to get to your GP. In such instances, you may venture online to search for symptoms and seek health information and advice. The issue in doing so is how do you know what information is and isn’t trustworthy.
“This is why The Information Standard is so crucial, as it’s a quality mark scheme for health and social care information. If the website or leaflet you’re consulting has an Information Standard quality mark, you can feel confident that the information provided is safe and reliable.”
All members of The Information Standard scheme, have been certified as providers of safe and reliable health information, can be found on The Information Standard website: www.theinformationstandard.org
