Scheme governance

In order to provide effective oversight of all aspects of the scheme and to ensure successful implementation and development over time, five governing bodies have been established. The governance structure and key responsibilities of each of the five bodies set out below.

How is it governed?

  • Executive Council, led by an independent Chair - will provide an oversight of the standard, agree and monitor overall strategy, protect against any perceived or real conflicts of interest and defend the reputation of the standard and brand.  The Council will seek advice on clinical matters, as required, with the Clinical Advisory Group (CIAG), which provides support to NHS Choices.  Advice will be sought, as required, on matters relating to social care from an appropriate body.
  • IS Programme Management Group, led by the Department of Health - will provide contract management and a reporting line for the scheme operator and UKAS; and take decisions on the governance, management, future development and operations of the standard within the strategy set by the Council.
  • Engagement and Development Board, led by the scheme operator - will advise on the development of the standard and provide a means of engaging stakeholders and the wider community of interest.
  • Certification Bodies Cooperation Technical Group, led by a certification body on rotation – will be responsible for ensuring that accreditation and certification are delivered according to the standard and scheme rules.
  • Operations Management Team, led by the scheme operator – will be responsible for day-to-day management of the scheme.
